Last weekend, our family decided to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse ourselves in the calm and charm of Kerala’s lesser-known backwater destination—Akalappuzha. Located in the serene countryside of Kozhikode district, Akalappuzha is often referred to as the “Kuttanad of Kozhikode.” We had heard about its peaceful waters and scenic boating experiences, and we chose Lake View Palace Boating Point for our day trip. What followed was a memory we’ll cherish forever.
Setting Off: First Impressions
We arrived at Lake View Palace around 10:00 AM on a sunny Saturday. The location was easy to find, just a few kilometers from Payyoli, and well-connected via the national highway. As soon as we stepped in, we were welcomed by the staff with genuine warmth. The boating point was clean, beautifully landscaped, and well-maintained. Palm trees swayed in the light breeze and the still waters of Akalappuzha glistened under the morning sun.
The Boat Ride Begins
We opted for a traditional Shikara boat, which was beautifully decorated and comfortably seated all five of us. The boat slowly cruised along the narrow channels and wider lake sections, revealing panoramic views of lush greenery, coconut groves, and quaint village life along the banks.
Our children were especially thrilled to spot egrets, kingfishers, and a group of ducks paddling alongside us. The gentle sway of the boat and the sound of the paddles cutting through the water created a rhythm that felt meditative.
Moments of Pure Bliss
Halfway through, the boat stopped for a quick break at a small island-like spot where we got out to stretch and take photos. The air was fresh, filled with the scent of mangroves, and the only sounds were chirping birds and the distant hum of village life.
We enjoyed some local snacks and coconut water, provided by the Lake View Palace team, adding a sweet, authentic touch to the experience. The staff were incredibly polite and informative, sharing stories about the lake, its history, and the flora and fauna found here.
Family Bonding Redefined
There was no rush, no traffic, and no distractions—just our family, nature, and the soothing lull of Akalappuzha. We laughed, talked, clicked countless photos, and even sat quietly, soaking in the peace. For a few hours, time stood still.
As the boat ride ended and we returned to the starting point, we all agreed: this was more than a boat ride. It was a soulful journey that brought us closer to each other and to the beauty of Kerala’s natural wonders.
